Preface
During the years which have elapsed since the publication of the first edition of this book, which embodied the Croonian lectures delivered before the Royal College of Physicians in 1908, many important contributions have been made to our knowledge of Inborn errors of metabolism.
The entire book had undergone thorough revision, in the light of the more recent investigations. Several chapters have been rewritten almost completely, and the incorporation of new matter has rendered necessary the subdivision of others.
Two entirely new chapters treat of Haematoporphyria Congenita and Congenital Steatorrhoea, inborn metabolic anomalies which have only been recognized as such in more recent years.
The author is greatly indebted to those who have supplied him with additional information concerning published cases, or have assisted him in various other ways; and especially to Prof. R.C. Punnett for his valuable help in connexion with the chapter on heredity.
It is hoped that the kindly reception accorded to this small treatise on its first appearance may be extended to this second edition.
